Recently I've been feeling very nostalgic. I have no idea why. Maybe it is because I am now in my late twenties. Who knows...Why are there so many 80s remakes? Not just that decade, but remakes in general? Maybe people just want to satiate their nostalgia. Almost all of these movies don't need to be remade and don't really benefit from it either. Why don't people just rewatch their childhood favorites? I read an article where a film studies expert (Wheeler Winston Dixon) said that "younger audiences haven't seen the originals, and older viewers might just be curious enough to buy a ticket to see what the updated version looks like." Every time I see a trailer for another remake I cringe. Why would I want to pay to see something that I've already seen before, just remade for today's Twilight obsessed youth? Alright, that's not really fair. There are some remakes that are really well done. Didn't someone once say that there are no new ideas? Oh wait, I just Googled it:
There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations. We keep on turning and making new combinations indefinitely; but they are the same old pieces of colored glass that have been in use through all the ages.
- Mark Twain, a Biography
So, I started clicking through a ton of videos that make me feel nostalgic. Ahh, the memories of wasted childhood. In case you are curious, or want to join me down this personal memory lane trip, I will include some links to things that are more universal such as TV, movies, and video games from my childhood memory vault. I will spare you the huge list of books I've started thinking about. Lately I've been calling my sister and saying things like, "Do you remember that book that was made up of postcards?" And she will say, "Are you talking about Griffin and Sabine?" Why yes, yes I was! Or, "Do you remember that pop up mystery-adventure-scavenger hunt book with the large map of an island?" Of course her response is, "Oh, you mean Search for the Rare Plumador?" How does she know? Mind like a steel trap I tell you. Thank goodness I have an insider to go to for info on my childhood memories!
